AMPLE

Women in the past are always deprived due to the people’s views that women are “just persons that stay at home”, “slaves”, “oppressed”, “weak”, and “incapable” of doing various things. People are used to have the perception of men being the strong persons, while women are breakable and fragile. That is why, men are obliged to do the “heavy” things and be the breadwinner of the family. Now, women are empowered, their freedom and their rights are equal to those of men’s. They can express now more of their feelings and contribute to the betterment of the society, of the world as whole. Bigueñas are one of those empowered women of today’s generation.

Gabriela Silang is an Ilocana who led a revolution in the past. She led a battle against Spaniards after her husband, Diego, died.Unfortunately, she was caught and hanged at Plaza Salcedo. She may not have won the battle against the invaders, but her bravery and leadership paved a way for women to lead. For long years, former mayor Eva Marie Medina led Vigan and achieved various awards under her name. Awards for Child-Friendly City, Environmental-Friendly, and numerous projects have been made and as Vigan has officially declared as one of the New Seven Wonder Cities of the World during her reign. Moreover, Vice Mayor Lulu Baquiran has been serving the city for many years. Additionally, there are also councilors, heads of different organizations, captains, principals, and many more occupations that are headed by a Bigueña.

Ever since the pandemic had hit us, globally, we have faced many unbearable challenges and have had hard times. Due to various restrictions, we have been limited and slowly let go of the old things we used to do. The "new normal" way of life was introduced, and gradually we are all adjusting to this kind of living. We are all part of this fight; men, women, any gender, age, race, and economical status. Since all of us are affected, many women have raised their heads and flags to showcase how powerful and important are they in this time of crisis. They have done and will continue do their contributions that will lead to our victory against the virus. Many inspiring, empowered, and super women have finally worn their capes, who served as heroes with their remarkable, unforgettable, and immeasurable experiences, sacrifices, and efforts that contribute to our success. The caring personality of women came out that aide to ensure the safety and health of the people. The selfless and relentless women of our society, ranging from the doctors, nurses, teachers, mothers, and all of them, who prioritized the others before their selves.

It just shows that women in this generation are now protected with their deserved rights and freedoms, and are vested with lots of encouragement and support from other people. No matter how small or big, all of their contributions are more than enough and they should not be belittled. We are all born equal, regardless of our genders, and we should love and empower each other to become the best versions of us.

With this, we can say that women can do everything too. That they are not JUST A WOMAN but an empowered woman who can change the world. And for me, the most important part of being her as an empowered woman is that she knows who she is, she knows her worth and she lives her purpose to educate and be a role model to all. An educator that brings not just bright and wise ideas but a powerful and mesmerizing ones. Surely in the end, we will realize that no matter what happen, women are equally important as men are in the society ; for their contributions are ample, and so they are.
